Information on Di-Calcium
Phosphate
Di-calcium phosphate, also
known as calcium
monohydrogen phosphate, is a dibasic calcium
phosphate. It is usually found as the dehydrate. It
can be thermally converted to the anhydrous
form.
It is practically insoluble in
water, with a
solubility of 0.02 g per 100 mL at 25 °C. It contains
about 23 percent calcium in its anyhydrous form,
and is mainly used as a dietary supplement in
prepared breakfast cereals, dog treats, enriched
flour, and noodle products.
It is also used as a tableting
agent in some
pharmaceutical preparations. It is used in poultry
feed.
Calcium supplements are used
to ensure an
adequate intake of calcium during important
periods of bone growth such as in childhood,
during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.
Two particle-size grades of
anhydrous dibasic
calcium phosphate are used in the pharmaceutical
industry. Milled material is typically used in wet-
granulated or roller-compacted formulations. The
unmilled or coarse-grade material is typically used
in direct compression formulations.
Anhydrous dibasic calcium
phosphate is
nonhygroscopic and stable at room temperature. It
does hydrate to form the dehydrate.
Anhydrous dibasic calcium
phosphate is used
in toothpaste and dentifrice formulations for its
abrasive properties.
